Lincoln Park is one of Chicago’s most popular northside neighborhoods. With more bars, restaurants and boutiques per capita than the rest of the city, this lively neighborhood also contains impressive greystones, brick townhomes and charming houses. Some of these homes are being built with the idea of having roof deck garden spaces to access sun and views.
The clients for this project were looking for an area on their rooftop to relax and take advantage of their prime sight lines to the downtown. Though the space is large enough for entertaining, it’s main purpose is to provide a place for escape. Achieving this request involved the reconstruction of the roofdeck with Brazilian Ipe, a beautiful and durable hardwood. The perimeter planters provide seasonal interest with a boxwood hedge and various annual plantings. A key component of the design incorporated a bubbler fountain originally used as a grain container in China. The trickling from the stone fountain, along with freestanding pots with large hardy bamboo and additional annuals, create a soothing atmosphere on this deck with spectacular views of Chicago’s skyline.
Jacobs/Ryan Associates conceptualized the space and stayed with the project right through construction to the placement of furniture.
